Do you have a John Deere 318 sitting idle because the original Onan engine no longer runs? At Small Engine Warehouse, we know these tractors are legendary for their durability and performance. It’s a shame to let a perfectly good frame go to waste just because the original engine is discontinued and parts are becoming scarce.
We’ve designed custom Repower Kits specifically to solve this problem. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to identify the right kit for your unit and explore the features of these modern upgrades.
Why Repower?
The original Onan engines used in the John Deere 318 officially stopped production in December 2003. Today, finding parts or getting a full rebuild can be difficult and frustrating. Our kits allow you to update to a brand-new OHV V-Twin design engine. These are designed to fit without having to cut into your hood or frame. To make the swap as seamless as possible, each kit includes a new PTO belt, throttle cable, muffler, and comes pre-wired to match the original wiring harness.
How to Choose the Right Kit
We have four kits available in total, but it is very simple to decide on the right one.
- Identify your engine series: Before choosing a kit, you must identify your current engine series. This is the most critical step to ensure a perfect fit. Check if your unit’s Onan engine model starts with a “B” or a “P”. The physical difference between our kits lies in the flywheel adapter. By identifying your series correctly, you ensure that the engine will mount perfectly.
- Choose your power level: Once you know your series, you have two distinct power levels to choose from, both utilizing world-class Briggs & Stratton Vanguard engines. The first option features a Vanguard 356447 with 18 HP and 570cc displacement. The second uses a Vanguard 386447 with 23 HP and 627cc displacement. Both options offer straightforward conversions. Your choice simply depends on your personal preference and the demands of your yard or attachments.
